November 2011 - Road Trip--Pearl Cruise part 2

Thursday, 11/24/11 – Thanksgiving Day
We woke up about our normal time and showered, dressed, packed up and enjoyed our juice & muffin. We left the hotel about and went to the McD’s drive thru for coffee & diet Coke. I have a rule about this road trip. I don’t want to eat at any of the normal fast food places that we can enjoy at home. I want something different! Drinks, however, are fair game anywhere!
We are now on the road heading to the Mardi Gras Casino in Cross Lanes West Virginia. This is a place I found online, while researching our driving route. Thought it might be a nice place to stop for lunch on Thanksgiving Day – thinking that perhaps we would have difficulty finding places open to eat. Also, we like to scope out new casinos and get their players cards.
We laughed at each other a few times, as it seemed we each reached for our drinks at the same time! Guess that happens after being together over a dozen years. Very comfortable.
We started our first audio book “The Divide” by Nicholas Evans.  Very good story!
The weather is amazing. No precipitation at all. Traffic was very light. Very nice morning drive.
We waved at Presque Isle, in Erie, PA as we passed by. I would have stopped, of course. But we were not ready to stop yet.
We traveled on maybe another hour before stopping for a bathroom break. We stopped at Sheetz for bathroom and the other part of our breakfast. It was about .
We got our food and ate in the car, while in the parking lot. Sheetz is like a 7-11, with a fast food counter inside. Mark got chicken biscuit, while I got egg burritos and we shared an order of deep fried apples…as something different. I also got a pumpkin coffee – yum. Our first CD had ended just as we got there. Perfect timing! We laughed at each other, as we both poured our new drinks into the previous cups! Thinking we will have a zillion little moments like this – also though we probably won’t recognize or remember them.

Back on the road and Mark is calling family to say hi and happy turkey day. Then I will take my turn. It is really annoying for both of us on the phone at same time in car.  I think Ashley & Nathan are ‘turkey-trotting’ this am in Webster, Justin is going to Grandma’s and Jenn is having a ‘Hobo Thanksgiving” with anyone who needs a place to eat turkey to stop over.
I was speed-dialing Justin, when that was interrupted by the phone ringing – it was Justin! How freaky was that?? Had a nice visit with him, for about 45 minutes. But made the drive time go by for both of us, as he was on the road to moms. I then called Ashley and learned that they decided not to do the turkey-trot afterall, as there was over 5000 people expected to do it. They thought it would be a zoo. So, they made cinnamon rolls and watched the parades with the boys! It is nice that she carries on some of our old traditions.
We stopped at at the first rest stop in W. Virginia and 2.5 hrs to go to the Mardi Gras Casino lunch stop.

We got there about and back on the road @ ! It was very small and not exactly what we expected. They race greyhounds there as well, however we didn’t see any of that while we were there. We signed up for players cards – and did not even get a ‘freeplay’ as new players. Girl at counter was nice & fun to chat with! We chatted about the 3 Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. We played a little bit, then hit the café for our late lunch. Mark had burger & fries, I had BLT & fries – both had water ($8.75) Isn’t that just the most typical Thanksgiving Day dinner you have ever had?  LOL

We stopped and took a photo of me with this LARGE jester on the way out. Security had to come over to see what we were doing. I told him I need to prove to the Face Book person for the casino that I had actually made it here! That was okay!

Back to the car about Sam said we’d be at the Holiday Inn Express in Columbia, South Carolina by . Of course, we knew it would be later, as there would be gas  and bathroom breaks on the way. I’m sure we’ll also need a snack, too!

State Capital building in Charleston,West Virginia.

We got to the room by !! How was that for timing? Great room – it was our first ‘split level’ hotel room! Great shower, too!
